25th March 2017 marked a significant event in Sarawak whereby Similajau National Park was chosen in commemorating the International Day of Forests 2017 that was held annually at the state-level celebration. The ceremony was officiated by YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment and Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment. In his speech, he said Sarawak has a landmass area of 12.4 million hectares, with 65 per cent of the land areas still under forest cover which is more than the national target of 50 per cent.

He added that the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg was committed to protect and preserve the forests for the benefit of the present and future generation.
The signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sarawak Forest Department and Forest Department of Peninsular Malaysia was witnessed by YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and presentation of mock cheques to the representatives to charitable bodies were also held concurrently.
A momento was presented by Director of Forests, Tuan Hj Sapuan Ahmad to YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan as a token of appreciation. This souvenir signifies the logo International Day of Forests 2017 that was made from hand-carved wood.
Bird release and tree planting activities were also held as part of the event in commemorating the International Day of Forests 2017.
